Another painful episode

To be honest, I’m cringing as I upload this piece of shit. I’m starting to wonder if I’m going to need therapy to work through this. Perhaps the shock of a near-death experience would help put things in perspective. Is there an award for “Most Neurotic Podcaster?” You know those dreams everyone has about being in a crowd and discovering you’re not wearing any pants? That’s what this is like.

But I am really happy with how the videos have been turning out. When nobody is around, I watch them over and over.

And here’s a bonus recording for diehard fans. On the way home I tried to re-record this morning’s episode, but I liked it even less and ended it with an f-bomb. You’ll have to download it manually because if I make a link to two MP3s in one post my RSS feed will barf.

OK, I’m going to press the “Publish” button now.

Here I go.

  1. Please don’t get too discouraged. I understand you’re working towards a personal goal that sometimes emphasizes quantity over quality. Not every post can be “perfect”. Sometimes the imperfections you may see in your work are actually the things that draw an audience to you.
That said, I have really been enjoying listening to the podcasts at work and watching the family-friendly videos at home with my kids (5,4, and 2). They were absolutely transfixed by the roller slide, and I was surprised at how interested they were in the grocery store and house tour videos. We would enjoy more like them as time and privacy permit.

As someone who likes to hear himself talk, but can’t stand the sound of his own recorded voice, I can imagine some of what you must be feeling as you publish your podcasts.

Please keep up the good work, and don’t let yourself get burned out!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. The videos, by the way, will always be family safe. The podcasts would be too, if I could learn to filter my thoughts bit better. Every time I slip I think, “Oh boy, Mom’s not gonna like that one.” But she’s lived with Dad for so long she should be used to it by now. And I’m too far away for her to wash my mouth out with soap anymore.

  2. Rich,

Hey I can already tell they are getting better. Your information on the Japanese job market and how consulting works was great. I’m actually in the process of transitioning my career to a business facing career in Japan and have been researching aspects of Japanese business for quite a while.

I always learning a little something new when I listen in, this time it was right up my alley. There was one a few episodes ago too where you left it recording about 1 minute before you spoke as you stepped off the train @ Shinjuku. It was a total flashback for me as I had my headphones on walking into work. Ahhhh, the memories. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

  3. Wow, no need to cringe this was a great post!
I will listen to the whole thing later this evening…I wanted to comment on subtitles…
Hmmm…I use Final Cut Pro…hmmm…regardless of what software you use, Yes subtitles can take a while…esp, if you are translating, or simply writing the text on the video for an effect…I have been doing it for a while and you will find you get better at it, like most things, just takes some practice…and yes a faster machine will help and make the whole process run a lot smoother…
Any help I can offer, just let me know, however I should warn you ahead of time…I will push you to get a Mac…lol…
