Another painful episode

To be honest, I’m cringing as I upload this piece of shit. I’m starting to wonder if I’m going to need therapy to work through this. Perhaps the shock of a near-death experience would help put things in perspective. Is there an award for “Most Neurotic Podcaster?” You know those dreams everyone has about being in a crowd and discovering you’re not wearing any pants? That’s what this is like.

But I am really happy with how the videos have been turning out. When nobody is around, I watch them over and over.

And here’s a bonus recording for diehard fans. On the way home I tried to re-record this morning’s episode, but I liked it even less and ended it with an f-bomb. You’ll have to download it manually because if I make a link to two MP3s in one post my RSS feed will barf.

OK, I’m going to press the “Publish” button now.

Here I go.

An entire Internet community in need of a serious ass-kicking

I was just checking out my Google Analytics stats for the first time and noticed a bunch of referrals back in November from a site with no domain name, just an IP address. Found out someone’s running a BBS there for train gropers to swap stories. A user had linked to the episode where I talked about my wife being groped. 100’s of men there from every corner of the globe, who should be lined up to have their heads used for batting practice. Not at all surprising, but it seems that to them Japan is an ass-grabbing paradise. When you read their posts, it’s obvious it’s not a one-time thing for them, and they won’t stop on their own.

Uber-nasty Windows Security Exploit

I have no idea WTF a WMF file is, but the basic gist is your Windows PC can get very severely hacked simply by visiting a website or opening an e-mail containing a trojaned image file. The exploit was discovered in the wild on Dec 27 but I wasn’t keeping up with geek news over the holidays.

Technical explanation here. A third party patch, unsupported by Microsoft but blessed by security experts, available here. Expert advice is to use the patch until MS releases an official version scheduled to be available on Jan 10. The makeshift patch uninstalls easily.

You might want to practice safe sex on the net for the time being. Porn sites are notorious for spreading computer viruses. Also, there’s a rumor it’s spreading via MSN too. Banner ads from a malware-for-profit company called Exfol are reported to be infected.

It would be a very good idea to make sure your anti-virus software is up to date. If you’re surfing commando or stopped paying for virus definition updates long ago, AVG Anti-Virus is free and trustworthy.

Lunch at Grandpa’s on New Years

This movie shows 100% typical family life for me. It’s for everyone who said they were curious to see the inside of Grandpa’s house, and to those of you studying Japanese and can’t get enough of hearing the real language.

I slapped this one together as quickly as I possibly could, and still from start to finish it took over four hours. Subtitles are an incredible time suck; not only adding them, but they also make the video take forever to render. I’m either going to have to find better video editing software or upgrade my CPU and motherboard. Working with the timeline in Windows Movie Maker is painfully slow.

I’m glad blip.tv lets me cross-post to my blog so I can just hit the upload button and go to bed. It’s 2:40am right now and I have to leave for work at 7.

Japanese New Year’s Decorations

Here are some Flickr tags for the three kinds of new year’s decorations you see in Japan.

shime-kazari
kagami-mochi
kado-matsu

Not usually spelled with hyphens, but it makes the words easier to read.

And here’s the traditional food for new years: o-sechi. O-sechi consists of many different foods, some eaten throughout the year, some not. To me, it’s all good, but I’ll put anything in my mouth as long as somebody somewhere calls it food.

While looking for photos of new years decorations I came across this user. Her photos are beautiful. Hard to believe she only started taking pictures in 2004.

Hatsumode

New Year’s is the one occasion when everyone “gets religion” here and pays a visit to a temple. It’s called hatsumode. Some show up at midnight, others visit during the day. Our family always goes late in the morning of Jan. 1.

It’s 6am and I just finished this video. I would have gone to bed hours ago, but I’ve been trying to fix a problem with Windows Movie Maker that’s putting an annoying blast of audio static between some clips during mixdown. It’s technical glitches like this that drive me nuts. Sorry to those of you listening with headphones.

Next podcast I’ll talk a bit about New Year’s here and explain some of the things you see in this video.

Update: I re-encoded it with Videora because it looked like shit. (Quicktime Pro does a horrible job with MPEG-4 compression.) Looks much nicer now, fewer artifacts, and I added letterboxing by running it through VirtualDub’s resize filter before encoding to H.264.

New Year’s Eve at the Pav’s

My contractually obligated media file for today. Happy New Year ya’ll!

BTW, good news for me, at least. I’m almost comfortable with putting out this unscripted, unedited, raw video file. If anything, it buys me 24 hours to make the next one.

Two steps forward, one back

No joke: Trying to kick the procrastination habit is harder than quitting smoking. It’s like how one cigarette leads to another, then another… Wow, imagine how tough it would be to try to get hardcore procrastinators to not just sign up to a support group, but also to attend more than one meeting.

Anyway, I recorded this one while driving.

Update: I didn’t realize the upload prematurely crapped out. Sorry about that. If you re-download the MP3 you’ll get the whole thing this time.
