Interesting Show Notes Experiment on curry.com

People like to do nice things for people they like. I like that about people. Part of being charasmatic is letting people do nice things for you.

Someone helped Adam Curry set up a wiki for his show notes. The content is user-contributed, and fanboys listeners went whole hog with the first entry.

Not that I plan on copying the idea–seems like the kind of thing that would work only for the uberfamous like Adam–but it’s an interesting step forward in the evolution intelligent design Flying Spaghetti Monster of podcasting.

I have thought of putting up a forum, but really, I should think first about putting out content a bit more frequently. And fixing that damn comment bug.

Sorry for the comment errors

Every time someone tries to leave a comment but they get an error message, I receive a blank e-mail on my keitai, and a little piece of me dies. It says, “Arrrh! Dammit! Not again!” and then it dies.

I’ve tried all the easy ways to fix it. I can’t duplicate the error, but people have sent me the message they get. I’ll keep at it when I can find time. Meanwhile, please use the e-mail address on the right if you get at error. I really appreciate feedback from people who enjoy the stuff I put out.

Aren’t Kids Adorable?

I spent the evening editing the video we took on how to open a bottle of lamune. Andy (5 yr. old) came in while I was working, so I put the headphones on him so he could watch and listen to the video as I went downstairs for another beer.

The little tyke closed the application when he was done watching. I hadn’t saved it yet.

Good night, everyone!

Update: Just found out it was auto-saved. My bacon was auto-saved. Halleleua!

Today’s Tip

When your boss is in a fit of rage over a mistake you made, don’t try to cheer him up by calling him “Mr. Grumpy Pants” to his face. (It doesn’t work.)

Update: Only joking. I wouldn’t really do that, and neither should you.

BTW, I hope reverting to the default WordPress theme fixes the problem with commenting. If it does, I’ll slowly and carefully start adding stuff back.

Oh, and the RSS feeds are working. The video feed hasn’t barfed all day. I also submitted them to iTunes, since the original seems to be in eternal limbo.

Feeling ignored? Lots of blank submissions lately

When someone submits a post to my blog, I receive the message first on my mobile phone and approve it if it’s not from a spammer or a douche bag an inconsiderate person.

Lately I’ve been receiving lots of blank notifications. If anyone has been trying over and over to add comments here but they never appear, could you please e-mail me? There’s a link on the right side of the page.

New RSS Feeds

I really screwed up the RSS feed today, but it’s fixed now. Sorry if your aggregator is showing a bazillion copies of each post. You might have to resubscribe or reload.

Here are the new RSS feeds:

Podcasts Only: http://feeds.feedburner.com/hfj_podcast
Videocasts Only: http://feeds.feedburner.com/hfj_videocast

And of course, the previous feed still works the way it always did. It carries audio, video and blog.

Oh dear. The poopcast is at the top of the podcast feed. We can’t have that, so it’s going bye-bye.

Update: Please let me know if they stop working again. Looks like I uncovered a bug in Feedburner.

A plea for tech help.

Oh, man, I hate asking for help. It decreases my virility.

I have a PCI video board that won’t work well when I add a USB 2.0 PCI board. When both are installed, videos play at about one frame every ten seconds. I’ve tried moving the boards around to different slots and I’ve tried reinstalling the drivers. No joy. In Windows XP, how can I track down the problem? This is a real PITA.

Alternatively, would anyone be willing to pay to see me naked so I can afford a new motherboard? Maybe that’s too disgusting. How about instead, for $250 I’ll shave your company’s name into the hair on my back and feature it in my next video.

Helping podcasters in iTune Store-less countries

Remember way back when I had an idea to help podcasters who can’t submit their show’s RSS feed to iTunes because they can’t get an Apple Store account in their country? I’ve been meaning to follow up on this.

Really, the easiest way is to ask your listeners to help out. Somebody listening to your show is going to be from a country in which iTunes has a presence. Or just send me an e-mail, since theoretically I should be able to open an account in the iTunes Japan store.

I’ve written to Apple 3-4 times already about my submission being in limbo. They only answered once with a canned response. I might have to change my RSS feed so I can resubmit it. I should do that anyway, and split the main feed into video-only and audio-only feeds. Seems like that’s the “in” thing to do these days.

Yeah, yeah, yeah…I’m still alive.

Do you want to know the truth? I hate editing audio. It seems like I’d rather do almost anything else. I need an attitude adjustment.

So what did I do last night when I should have been cleaning up the recordings I made at the Apple Store two weeks ago? I was surfing digg.com. I love that site. Their podcast is good too. Listen with friends and drink every time one of them say “dude.” You’ll get really fu*ked up.

The new visitor map helps me feel guilty for not putting out a podcast. I paid for the expanded version that shows the last 100 visitors to push my guilt to the next level.

Totally irrelevant, but it’s my blog, so here goes: Has anyone using Windows 2000 noticed their computer has become really, really slow since installing last week’s security update? Recently some of our workstations at work are one by one becoming painfully slow, but I can’t track down the cause. That patch was rushed out, which makes me suspect it’s the culprit.

Here’s a new Google Map/MSN Virtual Earth/Flash mashup. This is the location of the Apple Store in Shibuya. You can see the line of trees that camoflage it. Here’s where I want to record my next podcast. The Cicadas, crows and other birds in this park sound amazing. The building to the west is the Canadian Embassy. The smaller building to the southwest is the ambassador’s residence, and a little further to the southwest are the living quarters of the Embassy staff. Nice digs.

From now, I go shopping for some hot-swappable hard drives so we can keep a copy of our company data offsite at all times. All the recent earthquakes have my boss seriously thinking about disaster recovery, which is good.
